Summary

I completed the first round interview at Dell Technologies for a software engineering position, which covered DSA, Java concepts, microservices, Kafka, SQL, and design patterns.

How it went

Round 1 - DSA + Java Java & JVM

What are the different types of memory areas in Java/JVM, and what is each used for? What is the JVM? How does Java achieve platform independence and allow the same application to run on different operating systems? What are the key benefits and advantages of using Java for backend application development? Why is String immutable in Java? How is immutability achieved, and what are its benefits?

Microservices & APIs 5. How have you worked with microservices in your current or previous project? 6. What is a point-to-point (P2P) API call? How does one microservice communicate directly with another? 7. If your microservices architecture is event-driven, why do you still need synchronous API communication? 8. Can you explain the architecture of your current/previous project, including the major components and how they interact? 9. What are the different ways microservices can communicate with each other? When would you choose synchronous communication versus asynchronous/event-driven communication? 10. What is the Saga Pattern? How does it help manage distributed transactions across multiple microservices?

Kafka / Event-Driven Architecture 11. How can duplicate messages/events occur in Kafka? How do you handle duplicate message processing in a consumer? 12. How would you make a Kafka consumer idempotent so that processing the same event multiple times does not cause duplicate business operations?

PostgreSQL & SQL 13. What is PostgreSQL? What are some of its important features? 14. Given Employee and Department tables, write an SQL query to find all departments that do not have any employees. 15. What are the differences between PostgreSQL and MySQL? In what scenarios would you prefer PostgreSQL over MySQL?

Java Coding 16. Given an array of integers, write a Java program to find all Pythagorean triplets—for example, (3, 4, 5). 17. Given a string, write a Java program to find the first non-repeated character.

Design Patterns & Production Support 18. You mentioned design patterns on your résumé. Which design patterns have you used in your projects? Explain where and why you used them with real examples. 19. What is incident management? Can you describe a production incident you handled, including how you identified the issue, performed root-cause analysis, resolved it, and prevented it from happening again?
