Amazon L5 | Interview Experience | Offer

Summary
I went through five interview rounds for an L5 role at Amazon, performed strongly in DSA, LLD, HLD and Bar Raiser rounds, and ultimately received an offer.
How it went
Leetcode discuss has helped me a lot in prepping for recent interviews at both Amazon and Atlassian, and so this is a way if giving back. Hopefully, it helps someone else too!
Previous Company: US Travel PBC
Interview Rounds
R0 - OA New Pattern. 1 DSA Question and then a full fledged project setup with pre-written test cases. You have to find the buggy, or missing pieces of code and complete them in a modular way to make all tests pass. Time constraint and developer mindset is the most challenging part of this new Pattern.
R1 - LLD Design a Notification System. Multiple Channels like SMS, E-Mail. Multiple Users with configured channels. Factory, Strategy, Singleton Pattern. Error Handling and extensibility.
Standard LP
Verdict: Not bad. But could've been better. -> Hire
R2 - DSA Multiple Scale ups to a Base Problem.
- Given a Grid, find the minimum steps to reach the Bottom right cell from top left one, given Obstacles in the grid as well.
- Minimum Steps to reach bottom right, if you can remove at most K obstacles
- Minimum obstacles to remove so that you can reach bottom right in minimum steps.

30 Minutes LP and Project Discussion Only 30 Minutes to Solve these Problems. Brutal Time Management.
Verdict: Strong Hire
R3 - HLD Design a Job Scheduler. Single Run Jobs + Periodic jobs. Data Schema, Tables. High level Design for scalability. Database Choice (MongoDB vs Dynamo and why?), Queue System vs In-Memory System. Kafka integration and error handling. Expected Depth and maturity in answers and relentless pushback on loose responses until i tightened them with concrete backing logic.
Verdict: Strong Hire
R4 - Bar Raiser 30 Minutes of grilling on current project in form of LP. Depth, Impact, What I learnt and how I changed the org for good.
A DSA + LLD Problem
void upvoteSongByOne(string songName, string artistName);
void getTopKSongs(string artist);
A set-based LogK solution was required. The discussion became a little confusing and unclear but was able to end on a good solution.
Verdict - Lean Hire
My recuiter pushed in the HC Debrief based on the flawless DSA round and got the offer within a week of the last round.
Leadership Principles are a must. They can make or break your candidature all by themselves. Standard DSA + LLD + HLD prep enough to clear these. Practice to manage time and talking out loud while coding really helped me get my competence accross to the interviewers.

Shortest Path in Grid with Obstacles
Data Structures & Algorithms · Medium
Open the problemGiven a grid with obstacles, find the minimum number of steps to reach the bottom‑right cell from the top‑left cell while navigating around obstacles.
- 02
Shortest Path with K Obstacles Removal
Data Structures & Algorithms · Medium
Open the problemFind the minimum steps to reach the bottom‑right cell from the top‑left cell in a grid, where you are allowed to remove at most K obstacles during the traversal.
- 03
Minimum Obstacles Removal for Shortest Path
Data Structures & Algorithms · Medium
Open the problemDetermine the minimum number of obstacles that need to be removed so that the shortest path from the top‑left to the bottom‑right cell of a grid is achieved.

Song Upvote and Top‑K Retrieval
Data Structures & Algorithms
Implement two functions:
void upvoteSongByOne(string songName, string artistName); void getTopKSongs(string artist);A set‑based solution with O(log K) operations is required to support upvoting a song and retrieving the top K songs for a given artist.
How they prepared
I prepared using Leetcode Discuss to practice a wide variety of DSA problems and reviewed system design concepts. I also focused on Amazon Leadership Principles, practiced time‑boxed coding sessions, and simulated speaking my thought process out loud while coding to improve communication during the interview.
