Full Experience
Continuing my interview experience series, this one is from Zomato.
Company: Zomato Interview Date: June 2025 Role: SDE-1 (UI)
I applied by cold emailing a recruiter and was fortunate enough to get a response. The interview process consisted of 3 rounds and was heavily focused on frontend engineering fundamentals, React internals, performance optimization, and system design.
Round 1 - UI & Machine Coding
This was one of the most intensive frontend rounds I faced during my interview journey.
The interviewer covered almost every frontend topic imaginable:
- JavaScript Event Loop
- React Reconciliation
- JavaScript I/O Questions
- Browser Internals
- Frontend Optimization Techniques
- Rendering Performance
- React Fundamentals
The discussion was fast-paced, and the interviewer continuously jumped between concepts to test the depth of my understanding.
Result - Strong Hire
Round 2 - UI & System Design
This round was conducted on a Saturday and lasted approximately 1.5 hours.
The interviewer started with core frontend topics:
- Polyfills
- JavaScript Optimization Techniques
- Input/Output Questions
- React Internals
- How React Works Under the Hood
After the frontend discussion, the conversation shifted toward system design.
I was asked to design Google Calendar and explain:
- Architecture
- Data flow
- Event management
- Scalability considerations
- User interactions
- Frontend design decisions
This turned out to be one of the most important rounds of the entire process.
Fortunately, the discussion went extremely well, and I was able to explain both the frontend and architectural aspects in detail.
Result - Strong Hire
Round 3 - Onsite Discussion with VP of Technology
The final round was with the VP of Technology.
Unlike the previous rounds, this discussion focused less on coding and more on expectations, motivation, and long-term fit.
Some of the topics we discussed:
- Why I wanted to join Zomato
- My career goals
- What kind of work environment I prefer
- The challenges and responsibilities that come with the role
- What to realistically expect from the company
The interviewer was very transparent about the pace, ownership, and challenges involved in the role.
Towards the end of the discussion, he directly asked me if I was ready for the level of responsibility and expectations that came with the position.
It was a very honest and insightful conversation.
Result - Strong Hire
Final Result: Selected
