Summary

I successfully completed an off-campus SDE-1 (Fresher) interview process at Amazon, which included an online assessment, two technical DSA rounds, and two rounds focused on Leadership Principles, ultimately resulting in an offer.

Full Experience

I come from a Tier-2.5 private college and gained internship experience at Flipkart. My journey to Amazon for an SDE-1 (Fresher) role began with an off-campus application on August 23rd. I completed the Online Assessment on August 25th, and then proceeded through several interview rounds from November to December.

Round 1 — Online Assessment (OA)

The OA consisted of two DSA problems, both ranging from medium to hard difficulty. The first was a graph/priority queue style problem involving circular transitions, while the second was a greedy problem requiring careful sorting and prefix logic to handle positive, zero, and negative numbers. Both questions demanded clean implementation and thorough attention to edge cases. Following the coding section, I completed the Amazon Work Style Assessment. This behavioral assessment focused on Amazon's Leadership Principles, checking for traits like Ownership, Bias for Action, Deliver Results, Teamwork & Collaboration, and Decision-making under pressure. It was straightforward, asking me to select options that best aligned with my working style.

Round 2 — Technical DSA Round

In this round, the interviewer presented two medium-level DSA questions. One involved a greedy approach to intervals, similar to problems like merging intervals or handling overlaps. The other was a classic DP subsequence problem with non-trivial transitions and boundary conditions. I successfully solved both problems within the given time, thoroughly discussing my approach, time complexity, and potential optimizations. A week later, I received a call confirming that I had cleared this round.

Round 3 — DSA + Leadership Principles

This round started with several LP-based behavioral questions. I was asked to describe a time when I went "above and beyond," a situation where I demonstrated "ownership," and a difficult problem I had solved during my internship or in my personal projects. After the behavioral discussion, I was given one DSA question:

  • BFS: Generate the largest number ≤ n where adjacent digits differ by 1
  • Examples provided were: 121, 210, 343

I solved this question within the allocated time. Approximately ten days later, I received an email inviting me to the final round.

Round 4 — Hiring Manager (HM) Round

The final Hiring Manager round was entirely focused on Leadership Principles, with no coding involved. We discussed various scenarios and my experiences related to Amazon's LPs, including making choices between shortcuts and long-term solutions, managing responsibilities during my internships, instances where I solved something impactful, and examples demonstrating Customer Obsession, Ownership, and High Standards.

🎉 Final Verdict

One week after completing the HM round, I received a call from the recruiter confirming my selection for the SDE-1 role at Amazon.

Interview Questions (1)

Q1
Generate Largest Number with Adjacent Digits Differing by 1
Data Structures & Algorithms

The problem asked me to generate the largest number less than or equal to a given input 'n' such that all adjacent digits in the generated number differ by exactly 1. Examples provided were 121, 210, 343.
