Summary

I completed Amazon's SDE Internship 2027 online assessment, solving the coding problem and AI debugging perfectly, and finished the behavioral sections.

Full Experience

Amazon SDE Internship 2027 OA Experience

I recently gave the Amazon SDE Internship 2027 Online Assessment and wanted to share my experience since I wasn't very familiar with some of the sections beforehand.

The OA had 3 rounds/sections:

  1. Coding Round - DSA + AI Debugging
  2. Work at Amazon
  3. Work Style Assessment

Round 1: Coding - DSA + AI Debugging

DSA Problem

The problem involved an array where I could choose any subarray and increase every element in that subarray by some value x.

The goal was to sort the array using these operations while minimizing/returning the total power, where:

Power = sum of all values of x used

For example:

Array:
3 4 1 6 2

One possible sequence of operations:

Choose the subarray:

[1, 6, 2]

Increase it by 3:

3 4 4 9 5

Then choose:

[5]

and increase it by 4:

3 4 4 9 9

So the total power is:

3 + 4 = 7

I solved the problem using a heap-based approach. Looking back, I think the solution could probably have been simplified using just a maximum variable, but I went with the heap during the assessment.

I was able to solve the DSA problem in around 20 minutes and passed:

15/15 test cases.

AI Debugging

The coding round also had an AI Debugging section.

There were 6 test cases, and I was able to pass:

6/6 test cases.

Overall, I felt pretty good about the coding round.

Round 2: Work at Amazon

This was a section I wasn't really aware of before taking the OA.

It was presented as a simulated workplace/inbox environment.

I was given different workplace scenarios along with emails/messages in an inbox. For each situation, I had to evaluate possible actions/responses and rank or rate them based on their effectiveness.

The questions seemed to focus on how you would approach realistic workplace situations, such as:

  • Prioritization
  • Communication
  • Ownership
  • Problem solving
  • Handling conflicts/issues
  • Deciding when to take action or escalate

I tried to answer based on what seemed most effective for the situation while keeping Amazon's leadership principles in mind.

Round 3: Work Style Assessment

The final section was the Work Style Assessment.

This was more focused on behavioral/work preferences and how you would approach different situations in a work environment.

I completed the section and tried to remain consistent with my answers throughout.

Overall Experience

Overall, I felt that the OA went quite well.

My results:

DSA: 15/15 test cases ✅ AI Debugging: 6/6 test cases ✅ Work at Amazon: Completed ✅ Work Style: Completed ✅

The entire experience was quite different from a traditional coding-only OA because there was a significant behavioral/workplace component as well.

One Concern - Graduation Year

The main thing I'm unsure about is my graduation year.

The internship description mentioned that they preferred students graduating in 2027, while my expected graduation year is 2029.

I'm therefore not sure whether I will be shortlisted despite performing well in the OA.

For anyone who has experience with Amazon internships/recruiting:

  • Does Amazon strictly filter candidates based on the preferred graduation year?
  • Can a 2029 graduate still be shortlisted for an internship that prefers 2027 graduates?
  • How much does OA performance matter after clearing all the test cases?
  • Has anyone been in a similar situation with a graduation-year mismatch?

Would really appreciate insights from anyone who has gone through the Amazon SDE internship process.

Thanks!

Interview Questions (1)

1.

Minimize Total Power to Sort Array by Incrementing Subarrays

Data Structures & Algorithms·Medium

Given an array, you may choose any subarray and increase every element in that subarray by a chosen value x. The total Power is defined as the sum of all x values used across operations. Your goal is to sort the array in non‑decreasing order using such operations while minimizing the total Power.

Example

Array: 3 4 1 6 2

One possible sequence:

  1. Choose subarray [1, 6, 2] and increase by 3 → 3 4 4 9 5
  2. Choose subarray [5] and increase by 4 → 3 4 4 9 9 Total Power = 3 + 4 = 7.

You need to output the minimum possible total Power required to sort the array.

Constraints (as typically given):

  • Array length n ≤ 10^5
  • Elements are integers within a reasonable range.

Goal: Compute the minimal sum of increments x needed to transform the original array into a sorted (non‑decreasing) array.
