Summary

I successfully interviewed for and received an SDE-1 offer from Amazon in Bangalore. My experience highlighted the importance of LeetCode Mediums to some Hards, solving problems under pressure, and a strong understanding of Leadership Principles.

Full Experience

Although I couldn't remember all the questions, I do remember two of them:

  1. https://leetcode.com/problems/trapping-rain-water/description/
  2. https://leetcode.com/problems/shortest-bridge/description/

The remaining questions were also of similar difficulties. In almost all questions, I wasn't given all details and was expected to gain clarity by asking questions, which took some time.

I also faced a situation with the Rain Water Trapping question where the Bar-raiser asked it in the last 25 minutes. He didn't even paste the problem statement; he just pasted an array and gave some vague verbal statement without providing the expected answer. I had to handle this, imagining and solving it in my mind, outlining brute-force to optimal solutions. I didn't even get time to touch pen and paper in any of my rounds.

Timeline for my rounds and offer: For all my rounds, the recruiter reached out to me the next day of the interview, with 2-3 days gaps for the subsequent rounds. Finally, after 2-3 days of my Bar-raiser round, I received the offer ✅.

Interview Questions (2)

Q1
Trapping Rain Water
Data Structures & AlgorithmsHard

Refers to the LeetCode problem 'Trapping Rain Water'. The question was presented as an array with vague verbal instructions, requiring me to clarify details and solve it under significant time pressure without physical aids.

Q2
Shortest Bridge
Data Structures & AlgorithmsMedium

Refers to the LeetCode problem 'Shortest Bridge'. This was one of the questions asked during the interview.

Preparation Tips

My preparation involved being proficient with LeetCode Mediums and a few Hards, aiming to be able to immediately conceptualize solutions upon hearing a question. This allowed me to solve both problems in 45 minutes with detailed explanations covering brute-force to optimal approaches. The remaining 15 minutes were allocated for introductions, Leadership Principle (LP) questions, and Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA) follow-ups. For LP questions, I specifically followed this thread, as most questions were derived from it with slight variations.
