Summary

I went through six interview rounds for an L4 backend role at Adyen in Bangalore, completed an online assessment with two medium‑level coding problems, a DSA round, a system design round, and several leadership interviews. I was ultimately rejected after the leadership round.

Full Experience

I applied through the job portal and got a response next day. The role was for an L4 backend role java. I have 4.5 years of experience.

Overall there were 6 rounds.

Round 1 - HR Screen - Virtual Interview

  • Initial introduction
  • Was asked to talk about one of my recent projects and how I have navigated a disagreement (this is a follow‑up question).
  • Finally the recruiter asked, Why Adyen?
  • At end he said he would share me the OA link and told to finish it in under 3 days.

Round 2 - Online Assessment

  • Hackerrank link - 1hr duration
  • 2 leetcode medium questions

Question 1:

Given an array‑based problem where, for every pair (x, y), I had to determine whether it was a perfect pair based on the following conditions:

  • min(|x‑y|, |x+y|) ≤ min(|x|, |y|)
  • max(|x‑y|, |x+y|) ≥ max(|x|, |y|)

The task was to count the total number of such pairs in the array.

Question 2:

Given an array arr of n integers, you can perform the following operation any number of times:

Choose any index i (0 ≤ i < n‑1) and swap arr[i] and arr[i+1].
Constraint: Each element in the array can be swapped at most once during the entire process.

The strength of an index i is defined as:

Strength(i) = arr[i] * (i + 1) (using 0‑based indexing for the array, but 1‑based multiplier for the position strength).

Return the maximum possible sum of strengths of all indices after applying optimal swaps.

Round 3 - DSA Round - Virtual Interview

  • Introductions
  • Explain a past project
  • DSA Question: Find the Tree Diameter
  • There was a second question as well, but we didn't discuss it due to lack of time.

Round 4 - System Design - Virtual Interview

Question: Adyen is running a marketing campaign and wants to reward the 1,000,000th visitor to the campaign page.

Round 5 - Leadership Round - In person

I felt this was the most important round of all. The Head of Engineering and the Hiring Manager had taken this round in Adyen office.

Questions were standard:

  • What project are you most proud of?
  • Was there any disagreement?
  • Instances where you managed stakeholders.
  • Why Adyen?

I didn't structure my answers in STAR format, so got rejected in this round.

The last round was a Global Leadership Round, the interviewer would be from one of the overseas teams. I didn't give this round.

Interview Questions (8)

1.

Count Perfect Pairs in Array

Data Structures & Algorithms·Medium

Given an integer array, for every pair of elements (x, y) determine if it is a perfect pair based on the following conditions:

  • min(|x - y|, |x + y|) ≤ min(|x|, |y|)
  • max(|x - y|, |x + y|) ≥ max(|x|, |y|)

Return the total number of such perfect pairs in the array.

2.

Maximize Sum of Strengths with Limited Swaps

Data Structures & Algorithms·Medium

Given an array arr of n integers, you may repeatedly choose an index i (0 ≤ i < n‑1) and swap arr[i] with arr[i+1]. Each element can be swapped at most once in the entire process.

The strength of index i is defined as arr[i] * (i + 1) (0‑based index with a 1‑based multiplier).

Compute the maximum possible sum of strengths of all indices after performing optimal swaps under the given constraint.

3.

Find the Tree Diameter

Data Structures & Algorithms·Medium

Given a binary tree, find its diameter – the length (in number of nodes) of the longest path between any two nodes in the tree.

4.

Reward the 1,000,000th Visitor

System Design

Adyen is running a marketing campaign and wants to reward the 1,000,000th visitor to the campaign page. Design a system that can reliably identify and reward the millionth unique visitor.

5.

Behavioral: Project You Are Most Proud Of

Behavioral

Explain the project you are most proud of, focusing on your role, challenges faced, and the impact of the outcome.

6.

Behavioral: Handling Disagreement

Behavioral

Describe a situation where you had a disagreement with a teammate or stakeholder, how you addressed it, and the result.

7.

Behavioral: Managing Stakeholders

Behavioral

Provide an example of a time you managed multiple stakeholders, how you prioritized their needs, and what the outcome was.

8.

Behavioral: Why Adyen?

Behavioral

Explain why you are interested in joining Adyen and what attracts you to the company.
